The Weekend Reset

A two-day catch-up plan for one person with about half a day to spend. Triage, not perfection.

Tick the spaces your house has. Everything else disappears from the plan — timers and progress adjust automatically.

Five rules that make this work

  1. Set the timer for every sweep. When it rings, you move on — finished or not. Catch-up cleaning fails because of rabbit holes, not because of effort.
  2. Don't organize. Clean. Anything that needs a decision goes in a Later Box. You are not sorting the junk drawer today.
  3. Batch first, then rooms. Trash, dishes, and the gather happen across the whole house before you clean a single room. Otherwise you carry one sock upstairs eleven times.
  4. Laundry runs the whole time. Start a load before anything else, and move it every time a timer goes off.
  5. Chemicals do the waiting. Spray the bathrooms and walk away. Come back to work that's already half done.

Saturday · about 3 hours

Clear

Today isn't about clean surfaces. It's about getting the house back to a state where cleaning is even possible.

15MIN

Launch & haul

Start the thing that runs without you, then take out what's just taking up space.

30MIN

The gather

One basket per floor. Everything that doesn't live in this room goes in the basket — not up the stairs.

Rule: if an item makes you pause for more than three seconds, it goes in the Later Box and you keep moving.

40MIN

Kitchen

The single highest-leverage room. A clean kitchen makes the whole house feel handled.

35MIN

Common rooms, top down

Living, dining, foyer, mudroom. Dust falls — so surfaces before floors, always.

30MIN

Main floor floors

The last thing you touch on the main level. Then you stop for the day.

Stop here. The bathrooms will still be dirty and that's the plan. Tomorrow is the shine day.

Sunday · about 2 hours

Shine

The rooms that actually need scrubbing, plus everything Saturday couldn't reach.

5MIN

Spray and step away

Do this before your coffee. By the time you come back, the cleaner has done the scrubbing for you.

40MIN

Bathrooms — main floor, then basement

Top to bottom, dry to wet, toilet dead last so the brush never travels.

30MIN

Basement & laundry room

The rooms nobody sees, which is exactly why they're the worst right now.

25MIN

Bedrooms, fast pass

Not a real clean. Beds made, floors clear, laundry out — that's the whole assignment.

Leave the kids' rooms alone past a quick floor clear. That's zone work, and doing it for them costs you twice.

20MIN

Close the loop

The difference between a house that's clean and a house that stays clean for four days.

Sudsy says: a catch-up weekend isn't a failure state. It's the reset that makes the weekly rhythm work again. Get the house back to zero and the system can carry it from there.
